Fluted vs Clear Glass: Which Divider Glass Is Right for You?

Clear, fluted (reeded) or smoked glass for your Crittall-style divider? How each looks, how much privacy it gives, and where each works best.

Fluted vs Clear Glass: Which Divider Glass Is Right for You?

The frame gets the attention, but the glass changes how a divider feels day to day. Here's how the three popular options compare.

Clear glass

The classic. Maximum light, maximum sightline — the two spaces read as one, just gently defined by the black grid.

  • Privacy: none — you see straight through.
  • Best for: kitchen/dining dividers, anywhere you want openness and light above all, and showing off a beautiful room beyond.
  • Note: shows fingerprints and needs the odd wipe, like any glass door.

Fluted (reeded) glass

Vertical ribbed glass that's having a real moment. It transmits light beautifully while blurring what's behind it into soft vertical streaks — that lovely "almost see-through" look.

  • Privacy: partial — shapes and movement show, detail doesn't.
  • Best for: home offices, snugs, anywhere you want light and a degree of separation; it adds gorgeous texture and a high-end, designer feel.
  • Note: the most on-trend choice right now, and it hides marks better than clear.

Smoked (tinted) glass

Clear glass with a grey tint. Keeps the full sightline but adds drama and a moodier, more "industrial" tone.

  • Privacy: low — it's about look, not concealment.
  • Best for: darker, characterful schemes; pairing with the black frame for a strong, contemporary statement.

How to choose

  • Want it to feel open and bright? Clear.
  • Want light but a bit of privacy, plus the most fashionable look? Fluted.
  • Want drama and a moody tone? Smoked.

You can also mix — fluted in the door panels for privacy, clear above, for example. We'll show the combination on your layout drawing before anything is made.
